What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is an Internet address similar to your phone number or address.

Domain names always have 2 or more parts, separated by a Dot. DotStreet.com is an example of a domain name. In this example "DotStreet" is a second-level domain name, and "com" is a top-level domain name.

Once you own a domain name, you can provide all Internet services including personal or business websites, email, ftp, dial-up and telnet using that domain name or address. Viewers would be able to access your organization's Web site by visiting
"http://www.dotstreet.com" or "http://dotstreet.com"  with their Web browser. A domain name is also an important part of an email address. When used for an email address, the domain name follows the @ sign and must consist of a top level and second level domain name such as ideas@dotstreet.com.

Registrars: How do I register my Domain Name?

Find out if the domain name you want is available. You can do that by visiting DotRegistration page to access whois database that contains records for all of the domains that have been registered with the InterNIC. If the name that you want is already taken and you will have to find out an alternative name. If the name is not taken, then the name is available and you can register the domain name for yourself.

Domain names ending with .com, .net or .org can be registered through many different companies (known as "
registrars") that compete with one another. An alphabetical listing of these companies appears in the Registrar Directory on InterNic's site.

DotStreet.com strongly recommands you to use our DotRegistration page to access Registrars.com's domain name registration services. Currently registration fee is $60 USD for two-year domain registrations.

Who is the "InterNic"? Is the "InterNIC" synonymous with Network Solutions, Inc.?

No. The InterNIC is a concept for an integrated network information center that was developed by several companies, including Network Solutions, in cooperation with the U.S. Government.

Under a recent agreement with the U.S. Government, Network Solutions is transitioning from the use of the word "InterNIC" in connection with its products and services. InterNIC is a registered service mark of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Buy/Sell: - How much is a Domain name worth?

Buying/Selling Domain Names is much like buying/selling any piece of "
intellectual property". Domain Names have sold for prices ranging from $70 to several Millions.

We would like to suggest the following price table for different dots***. You may agree with this table or maybe not. We are just suggesting prices for your reference. So, do not bother with this suggestion if you don't agree with. The price you can ask depends on how quickly you want to sell, as well as how much interest you can generate in your dot names. We suggest that you price your dot names between $250 and $10,000 unless there are exceptional cases for pricing them higher. Even pricing dot names low will not speed your sale. You still need potential buyers that see a need. This could happen in 2 weeks or 2 years!

DotStreet.com provides the FREE domain name posting service and also provides the "on-dot-b.gif (241 bytes)Check", "on-dot-b.gif (241 bytes)Link", or "on-dot-b.gif (241 bytes)Ad" options if you like any or all of your domain names to be listed in on-dot-b.gif (241 bytes) and BOLD typeface.

*** Domain names listed on the table are for examples, not for buying or selling them.
